And then the show devolved into predictability as scheduled, though that may not actually be something to scoff at. The actors winning for their performance in a Limited Series— Michael Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Murray Bartlett, and Jennifer Coolidge—all had long been predicted to win, though an Emmy for the veteran actors feels long overdue. Ultimately, it feeds into the main lesson from this year’s Emmys, which is that it now behooves showrunners to start building projects around actors that have kept at it, but never quite gotten their moment to shine....

While Judd Apatow’s “The Bubble” isn’t as grating or grandiose as Adam McKay’s apocalyptic “Don’t Look Up,” this star-studded Hollywood caricature is even more unexpectedly depressing. That element of surprise doesn’t work to Apatow’s advantage. It’s not meant to be a compliment when I say that “The Bubble” is depressing in a way that modern comedies rarely are — that it’s depressing in a way as novel as the coronavirus that inspired it....

In the final episode of “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” a stylish serialized riff on Henry James’ horror novella “The Turn of the Screw,” the show’s central philosophy is revealed during an exchange between two women. “You said it was a ghost story,” the bride from the opening scene tells her mysterious silver-haired guest, the benevolent narrator (Carla Gugino) who’s been regaling the wedding party with the story of Bly Manor....

The 2017 Tom Cruise film was expected to kick off Universal’s Dark Universe franchise, extending to revivals of “The Bride of Frankenstein,” “Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde,” and “The Invisible Man” with Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, and Johnny Depp attached to the respective projects. However, plans for the Dark Universe were scrapped after “The Mummy” failed to find life at the box office, making less than $32 million opening weekend on a budget of an estimated $190 million....

Though always a classic in the cinematic imagination, con artist stories have been particularly in vogue as of late. Just look at the flurry of projects about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes (both Jennifer Lawrence and Amanda Seyfried will take a crack at her oddball cadence), or Shonda Rhimes’ upcoming Netflix show about faux-socialite Anna Delvey. Though “The Tinder Swindler” is unlikely to capture the same degree of schadenfreude-flecked fascination, it lays out its satisfying story at a decent pace to capitalize on the trend....
